With one of the coldest winters on record last year and weather forecasters predicting another cold winter this year, highways agencies and local authorities will be bracing themselves for another difficult few months.

The organisations responsible for keeping the UK’s roads clear have been working hard to increase their capacity for salt & grit storage, by either increasing the size of existing buildings, or by building new salt storage facilities.

A popular method of building retaining walls for the salt storage bays is by using a covered precast retaining wall build from either prestressed concrete panels or L-shaped retaining wall units. Using precast concrete allows contractors to install the retaining walls quickly and then a roof can either be fixed directly to the top of the retaining walls, or a steel frame building can be erected and the retaining walls fixed inside the building.
